Rustic Fall Balcony with Crate Shelves and Lanterns

Wooden crates are the rustic balcony’s secret weapon, because turned on their sides and stacked they become instant shelving you can rearrange or carry inside for winter. Stack no more than three high, with the heaviest crate at the bottom. Fill the shelves loosely with small gourds, a candle and one trailing plant, leaving a little air in each box. Galvanized tubs of ornamental kale shrug off early frosts and last well into November. A weathered chair with a gray wool blanket makes the corner inviting, and a row of lanterns along the floor gives soft light without needing an outlet.
